Coeval documents give accounts on tsunami effects in Venice and Trieste. In Venice, water in the canals rose so much that the inhabitants were frightened (Lancellotti, 1673). According to an eyewitness, after the earthquake some canals dried out (Sanudo, 1886) and anomalous oscillations were observed in the canals (Bembo, 1790). At Trieste the sea level rose so high that the inhabitants climbed up to S. Giusto (Marsich, 1878).
