On 26 March 1511 north-eastern Italy was struck by a strong earthquake (IX MCS), with epicentre located inland some 40 km from the coast. Coeval documents give accounts on tsunami effects in Venice and Trieste. In Venice, water in the canals rose so much that the inhabitants were frightened (Lancellotti, 1673). According to an eyewitness, after the earthquake some canals dried out (Sanudo, 1886) and anomalous oscillations were observed in the canals (Bembo, 1790). At Trieste the sea level rose so high that the inhabitants climbed up to S. Giusto (Marsich, 1878). I = 5, R = 2.
