On 17 March 1875 the western Adriatic coast was struck by a major earthquake (VIII MCS). The epicentre located on the coast close to Rimini. Following the earthquake, tsunami effects were noted at several locations (Serpieri, 1876, 1878, 1889): At Rimini fishermen in boats observed some big waves; in the harbour sea level was at high tide, suddenly it changed to low tide and 2 min later returned again to high tide. At Cervia the sea violently flooded a large stretch of beach, at Cesenatico some big waves flooded the beach, in Ancona sudden waves were observed at the beach coming from sea that was previously calm (L’Arena, 1875). At the beach of Pesaro eyewitness were reached by two big waves up to their waist (Tinti et al., 2004). I = 5, R = 4.
