Other components were calculated from the residual (Z<sub>r<\/sub>) using the Kaiser-Bessel filter: <em>high-frequency oscillations<\/em>\u00a0(Z<sub>HF<\/sub>; 2 h \u2013 9 h), <em>synoptic component<\/em> (Z<sub>syn<\/sub>; 9 h \u2013 10 d),<em> planetary-scale variability<\/em> (Z<sub>plan<\/sub>; 10 \u2013 100 d) and<em>\u00a0long-term sea-level change<\/em>\u00a0(Z<sub>long<\/sub>; 100 d &lt;).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-be9dfcc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"be9dfcc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><u>Storm surges<\/u> are the main contributor to flooding in the northern Adriatic. They are formed when Mediterranean cyclones move across the Adriatic, causing an air-pressure gradient and a southerly wind Sirocco (Figure 2) (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/joc.719\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trigo and Davies, 2002<\/a>). The amplitude of the tidal signal increases towards the closed end of the basin, where it reaches values above 0.5 m (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.5194\/angeo-23-3207-2005\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Janekovi\u0107 and Kuzmi\u0107, 2005<\/a>).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0176ab2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0176ab2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><u>Planetary-scale variability<\/u> is a response of sea level to different drivers of which the most important are atmospheric planetary waves (Rossby waves) that occur in the middle troposphere (500 hPa) with periods of 10 \u2013 100 days (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2000JC900023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pasari\u0107 et al., 2000<\/a>).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-33
