The future of our oceans lies in the hands of citizens living by the oceans. At the SHExtreme project,\u00a0 we are aware of this and thus we place special attention on educating islanders on ocean-related topics.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

During the summer of 2021, within the frameworks of the SHExtreme and\u00a0the <\/span>StVar-Adri<\/span><\/a>\u00a0projects,\u00a0\u00a0five enthusiasts from the Faculty of Science (Kre\u0161imir Rui\u0107, Jadranka \u0160epi\u0107), the Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia (Maja Karlovi\u0107, Marko Mlinar) and the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (Natalija Duni\u0107) have organized a series of activities at three Croatian Islands: Kor\u010dula, Ugljan and Vela Luka.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

At all three locations, several types of workshops for school children aged 6-15 were held. The children were given instruments to measure atmospheric and ocean temperature and learned about the differences between different fluids. They also learned and experimented with density. The children were engaged in ecological discussions and guided towards a set of their own solutions on how to protect oceans. As a relaxation from all the hard work they did, we engaged them in creative activities and played a lot of ocean-based board games with them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Lectures to general publications were also given: in Vela Luka (Kor\u010dula), Jadranka \u0160epi\u0107 spoke about the Great Vela Luka flood of 21 June 1978, and in Vrboska (Hvar) she spoke about the Vrboska meteotsunamis. In Ugljan (Ugljan) Natalija Duni\u0107 talked about climate change in the Adriatic Sea. All lectures were given in a very lively and cozy atmosphere of caf\u00e9 bars located next to the sea \u2013 thus, no surprise that they were well visited and followed by vivid discussions. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
