A new research article “Mediterranean meteotsunamis of May 2021 and June 2022: Observations, data analysis and synoptic background” has been published in the journal Geofizika. Mia Pupić Vurilj, Tina Brnas, Krešimir Ruić, Jadranka Šepić, and Marijana Balić, delved into the fascinating world of meteorological tsunamis in the Mediterranean.
In May 2021 and June 2022, strong meteotsunamis hit multiple Mediterranean locations up to 500 km apart. The study analyzes sea-level and atmospheric pressure data, satellite imagery, and synoptic conditions associated with these events. The research confirms that Mediterranean meteotsunamis occur when meteotsunamigenic synoptic conditions prevail over the area, with a strong southwesterly jet stream embedded in dynamically or convectively unstable atmospheric layers standing out as the most important condition.
